PlayHT (Play.ht), the text-to-speech platform run by PlayAI, shut down on 31 December 2025, after Meta acquired PlayAI in July 2025. If you used it, there are three things to move: your scripts, your cloned voices and any code that called its API. Scripts are plain text, so they paste straight into VocalLab. A cloned voice is a model that lives on the platform that trained it, and VocalLab cannot import one, so you re-create each voice from your original recording with a 15–30 second sample (30 seconds recommended) and a consent step. Calls to the old API have to be rewritten against VocalLab's REST API or MCP server, which come with Pro at $24 a month. VocalLab's plans are fixed and published: Free with 60 points and one clone, Lite at $9 a month with one clone, Pro at $24 with ten clones and Max at $299 with 200. Checked 17 October 2026.

Is PlayHT really shut down?
Yes. Meta acquired PlayAI, the company behind PlayHT, in July 2025, and PlayHT shut down on 31 December 2025. If you still hold an account, follow any notice PlayHT sent you about your stored data.
Can I import my PlayHT voice clones into VocalLab?
No. A clone is a model that lives on the platform that trained it, and VocalLab cannot import one from another service. Re-create it from your original recording with a 15–30 second sample (30 seconds recommended) and a consent confirmation.
How many voices can I re-create?
Free keeps 1 clone for good as a one-time allowance, Lite keeps 1, Pro keeps 10 and Max keeps 200. On a paid plan you can delete a clone to free its slot.
Can I reuse my PlayHT scripts?
Yes, scripts are plain text. Paste them into the Studio, import a book in one of 10 formats for audiobook narration, or paste a script labelled NAME: text into the Podcast Studio for a multi-voice episode.
I called the PlayHT API. What changes?
The requests need rewriting. VocalLab's REST API lives at api.vocallab.ai with Bearer keys, speech generation is POST /api/v1/tts, and API charges are ⌈characters ÷ 15⌉ points. API and MCP access come with every plan, Free included.
Will my new clone sound identical to the old one?
It is trained on your recording, so it carries your timbre, but it is a different model and will not match byte for byte. Generate one paragraph from both sources and compare before you re-render a whole project.
