AI audiobook generator

Upload a manuscript or ebook in any of 10 formats. VocalLab finds the chapters, lets you cast a voice for every character, and exports an M4B with chapter markers, an MP3 or a ZIP.

How it works

From file to finished audiobook in four steps

  1. Upload the book

Drop in your manuscript or ebook file. Chapters are read from the table of contents or the headings, and page furniture such as running headers and page numbers is stripped.
  2. Cast the voices

Pick one narrator for the whole book, or give each character a voice of their own. Your own cloned voice and designed voices work here too.
  3. Generate and listen

Voice the whole book, one chapter or a single line. Fix a mispronounced name once with a pronunciation rule and re-voice only the lines it touches.
  4. Export the audiobook

Download an M4B with chapter markers, one merged MP3, a ZIP with a file per chapter, or WAV for a lossless master. Exporting costs no points.

Formats

What goes in, and what comes out

Bring the file you already have. The only limits are DRM-protected store downloads and scanned PDFs without a text layer.

Features

Built for books, not for short clips

  • 10 import formats

EPUB, MOBI/AZW3, PDF, DOCX, ODT, RTF, FB2, HTML, Markdown and TXT. Kindle files must be DRM-free, and scanned PDFs need a text layer because there is no OCR.
  • Chapters that hold their shape

EPUB chapters come from the top level of the table of contents, so a story's parts stay inside their chapter. Files that pack several chapters together are split on their headings.
  • A voice per character

Assign voices line by line for dialogue-heavy fiction, or keep one narrator. Over 200 languages are available on the Studio model.
  • Pacing you can set

Set the book's speed and each voice's speed, and add pauses after punctuation automatically. Paragraph and chapter gaps are added at export without re-voicing anything.
  • M4B with real chapter markers

Chapter offsets are measured from the encoded audio rather than estimated, so markers land where the chapter actually starts, even hours into the book.
  • Mastered as one book

Optional loudness mastering measures the whole book once, so quiet and loud chapters keep their relative levels instead of being flattened one by one.

Who it's for

People who already have the book written

  • Self-published authors

Turn the DOCX or EPUB you already uploaded to a store into an audio edition, chapter by chapter, at your own pace.
  • Fiction with a cast

Give the narrator, the hero and the villain different voices, and keep each one consistent across 40 chapters.
  • Nonfiction and courses

Narrate a business book, a manual or course notes in your own cloned voice from a 15–30 second sample.
  • Public-domain classics

Bring a Gutenberg EPUB or TXT in, and chapter detection does the splitting that would otherwise take an afternoon.

FAQ

Audiobook questions

Can I try it before signing up?

Yes. The demo on this page takes a real ebook file and voices a sample without an account. When you want the whole book, it hands the file to the Studio so you don't upload it twice.

Which file formats can I upload?

Ten: EPUB, MOBI/AZW/AZW3, PDF, DOCX, ODT, RTF, FB2, HTML, Markdown and TXT. Kindle files have to be DRM-free, such as a MOBI you exported yourself. Legacy .doc files aren't read, so save them as DOCX first.

Does it work with scanned PDFs?

No. There is no OCR step, so a PDF made from page images is rejected. A PDF exported from a word processor has a text layer and uploads fine.

What do I get when I export?

An M4B audiobook with chapter markers, one merged MP3 (with optional chapter markers), a ZIP with one file per chapter, or WAV. MP3 comes at 320, 256 or 192 kbps, up to the quality the book was generated at.

How much does an audiobook cost?

Generation is billed in points, and one point is roughly one second of audio. A typical novel runs 8 to 12 hours, so it needs a paid plan; the Free plan's 60 points are enough to hear how a voice reads your opening. Exporting is free.

Can the audiobook be narrated in my own voice?

Yes. Clone your voice from a 15–30 second sample (30 seconds is recommended), then cast the clone as the narrator.
