Free to start. No card needed.

Scrivener has no direct import. Compile to DOCX or EPUB with chapter headings kept, upload it, then cast voices and export an M4B or MP3.

Step-by-step guide

How to Use Scrivener to Audiobook

Start for free — no credit card, no software to install.

  1. Open Compile

Choose which documents form the book and leave out research, notes and anything you do not want spoken.
  2. Choose the format

Pick DOCX or EPUB. RTF or ODT also work. Avoid plain text because it carries no headings.
  3. Open the output and look at the headings

Every chapter title should be a heading rather than body text. If not, change the choice in Compile and run it again.
  4. Upload, cast and export

Upload the compiled file, look over the chapter list, assign voices and export your book.

About this tool

Everything you need to know about Scrivener to Audiobook

Scrivener projects cannot be uploaded directly, so to turn a Scrivener manuscript into an audiobook you first use Compile to export it as DOCX or EPUB. RTF and ODT also work. What matters is the output format and whether your chapter titles survive as headings, because chapter detection depends on them. A compiled DOCX or EPUB that keeps chapter headings splits cleanly. Plain text drops that structure and gives detection less to work with.

FAQ

Scrivener to Audiobook — FAQ

Something not covered here? Contact us · support@vocallab.ai

Can I upload a Scrivener project file?

No. A Scrivener project is not an accepted format. Compile it first and upload the exported file.

Should I compile to DOCX or EPUB?

Either works. DOCX is simple to inspect before uploading. EPUB gives chapters through its table of contents, using the top level as chapters.

How do I make sure chapter headings are kept?

After compiling, open the output and check each chapter title appears as a heading. If a title has turned into body text, change the format choice in Compile and export again.

Will my notes and synopsis cards be read?

Only what ends up in the compiled file is read. Leave notes and synopses out of what you compile so they do not appear in the text.

Can RTF or ODT be the compile output?

Yes. Both are accepted. Use them if DOCX or EPUB does not suit your setup.
