Exporting Your Audiobook
When the writing and generating are done, export stitches everything into one finished file.
New to the audiobook editor? Start with How to Make an Audiobook — it has a full video walkthrough.
Before you export
Export only includes lines that have already been generated. Anything you wrote but never generated is skipped without stopping the export, so it's worth a quick pass first:
- Open each chapter and click Generate Chapter — it only processes lines that are missing or edited, so this is cheap on chapters you've already finished
- Check the chapter play button. It stays grey until every non-empty line has current audio, which makes it a reliable completeness check
- Then export
Exporting
Click Export project in the top bar.
VocalLab stitches every chapter, in order, into one combined MP3, inserting real silence wherever you placed a pause block.
The export dialog shows what you're getting — total duration, and counts for voices, lines, and chapters — plus a Download button.
What to expect from the file
A few things are worth knowing up front, because they're fixed:
- The export is always a single MP3. There is no per-chapter export and no choice of format at export time.
- Chapters are concatenated in the order shown in the Chapters rail. Reorder there if you need a different sequence.
- Pause blocks become real silence in the file, at the duration you set.
- Ungenerated lines are skipped silently. The dialog tells you how many were skipped — if that number isn't zero and you expected a complete book, go back and generate them.
Downloading a single line
You don't always need the whole book. The block menu on any speaker line has Download line, which saves just that line's audio. Useful for pulling out a sample, a chapter intro, or one take you want to reuse elsewhere.
Re-exporting
You can export as many times as you like — after fixing a line, adding a chapter, or recasting a voice. There's a short cooldown of a few seconds between exports, so if the button doesn't respond immediately, wait a moment and try again.
Re-exporting does not re-generate anything and does not cost points. It only restitches audio you've already paid for.
Troubleshooting
"Generate at least one line before exporting." Nothing in the project has been generated yet. Generate at least one line first.
The export is shorter than expected / a chapter is missing Those lines were never generated, so they were skipped. Open each chapter, run Generate Chapter, and export again. The skipped-line count in the export dialog tells you how many were affected.
I wanted separate files per chapter Not currently supported — export always produces one combined MP3. As a workaround, use Download line for individual pieces, or keep separate projects per chapter if you need them delivered separately.
I wanted WAV Audiobook export is MP3 only. For WAV output, generate the text through text to speech instead, where format options depend on your plan — see Audio Formats & Export.
The export button doesn't do anything There's a few-second cooldown after each export. Wait a moment and click again.
